Project Spotlight: Medford Andrews & McGlynn Middle Schools HVAC Electrification Projects

B2Q recently supported the City of Medford in identifying HVAC replacement options and designing the chosen alternative for the 104,000 square foot Andrews Middle School and the 186,000 square foot McGlynn Middle School. The final design focused on energy efficiency, decarbonization, and long-term cost savings, ultimately providing the City with a practical path toward electrification. B2Q completed the construction documents in the Spring of 2025 and is currently supporting the construction phase of these projects. Curious about the results?

Industry Insights: Summer Trends in Energy & Sustainability

Digitalization and Smart Building Integration

As buildings and the equipment within them continue to evolve, one of the most significant shifts in our industry will be the acceleration of digitalization in building systems. Clients are increasingly seeking smart building solutions that leverage IoT sensors, advanced analytics, and real-time monitoring to optimize energy use, enhance occupant comfort, and streamline maintenance. Since day one, B2Q has leveraged building automation system data to identify, quantify, and verify energy savings opportunities. Our teams are positioned to help transition building owners to these next generation platforms, delivering both energy savings and improved maintenance.

Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) and Microgrids

As cities and towns continue to electrify their buildings, the trend toward decentralized power generation and storage continues to gain momentum, with more organizations exploring on-site renewables, battery storage, and microgrid integration. These distributed energy resources empower clients to reduce grid dependence, improve energy security, and participate in demand response programs. B2Q’s expertise in renewable energy integration and microgrid feasibility assessments positions us to help clients navigate these opportunities.

Regulatory Updates and Clean Energy Compliance

Massachusetts and other states have introduced new or updated clean energy regulations this spring, including enhanced building performance standards and incentives for electrification and carbon reduction. B2Q’s Energy consulting services are helping clients stay ahead of evolving requirements, ensuring projects are eligible for incentives, and driving both operational savings and improved resiliency.

AI and Data-Driven Energy Optimization

Artificial intelligence and machine learning are now being used to analyze building performance data, identify energy-saving opportunities, and predict maintenance needs. B2Q is actively incorporating these technologies into our commissioning, retro-commissioning, and ongoing monitoring services to help clients maximize efficiency and performance.

Celebrating Our Interns

This summer, B2Q Associates proudly welcomes four interns to our team. Their fresh perspectives strengthen our commitment to sustainable, forward-thinking engineering grounded in technical expertise. Our internship program offers meaningful, hands-on experience working on real-world decarbonization and energy efficiency projects, fostering the next generation of industry leaders.

From collaborating on high-impact projects to exploring new technologies, our interns have embraced opportunities to learn, grow, and meaningfully contribute to B2Q’s mission. We’re thrilled to support their professional development and grateful for their talent and energy.

Volunteering Event: Gaining Grounds

This spring, members of the B2Q Associates team returned to Gaining Ground Farm in Concord, MA, for a volunteer day in support of the farm’s mission to combat food insecurity. Despite the rainy weather, our team rolled up their sleeves to help with fieldwork and spring preparation. Gaining Ground has been growing and donating fresh, organic produce to local communities free of charge for over 30 years, using regenerative, no-till farming practices. We’re proud to support their important work and appreciate the opportunity to contribute again this season. Below you can see members of B2Q working hard to get the fields ready for planting!

Q2 Team Growth

In Q2, B2Q welcomed three new team members, each one bringing valuable skills and meaningful experience to the team. Please join us in welcoming these new individuals to the team!

A Fresh Look at B2Q: Our New Office Renovation

We’re excited to share that B2Q Associates has officially completed the renovation of our office space. After months of planning, design, and construction, our updated workspace is now open and fully operational. Our renovated office features an open-plan design, upgraded meeting rooms, expanded workspaces, and welcoming common areas that reflect B2Q’s forward-thinking culture.

We look forward to welcoming clients, partners, and visitors into our new space and are excited about the opportunities it will help foster in the months and years to come.
